Biography

Alojzije Stepinac (1898-1960) was a Croatian Catholic archbishop and cardinal who suffered persecution for his unwavering defense of the Church and human dignity under communist rule. Appointed Archbishop of Zagreb in 1937, he witnessed Nazi occupation and immediately after faced brutal communist oppression under Tito's regime. Despite threats to his life, he publicly defended Catholic rights, spoke against injustice, and refused to subordinate the Church to state ideology. In 1946, the communist government orchestrated a show trial, convicting him of alleged wartime collaboration on fabricated charges and sentencing him to 16 years imprisonment. Subjected to torture and harsh conditions, he maintained his faith and forgave his persecutors. Released in 1951 but kept under house arrest, he continued his ministry until his death. His steadfast courage against totalitarianism and testimony to faith under persecution became a model for martyrdom in the 20th century.
