Born in Catalonia, he was ordained in 1835 and founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians) to extend missionary work globally. As archbishop of Santiago de Cuba (1850-1857), he confronted slavery, corruption, and ecclesiastical laxity with uncompromising determination. Despite facing violent opposition and multiple assassination attempts, he remained dedicated to spiritual renewal and social justice.
