Biography
John the Baptist, the forerunner to Jesus Christ, was born to Zechariah and Elizabeth. He lived as an ascetic in the wilderness, baptizing penitents in the Jordan River. His most significant act was baptizing Jesus, recognizing Him as the Messiah. John fearlessly denounced King Herod Antipas for marrying his brother's wife, Herodias. This condemnation led to his imprisonment. During Herod's birthday feast, Herodias's daughter Salome danced before the king, so pleasing him that he promised her anything. Prompted by her mother, she requested John's head on a platter. Around 34 AD, Herod reluctantly ordered John's execution, and he was beheaded in prison. John's martyrdom exemplifies unwavering commitment to truth and righteousness, even unto death. His feast commemorates his sacrifice and his role as the precursor to Christ's ministry.
