Biography

Born in Jerusalem around 313, Cyril became bishop of that holy city around 349, making him guardian of Christianity's most sacred sites. He was a gifted catechist whose instructions to baptismal candidates, preserved in twenty-four homilies, remain among Christianity's finest theological documents. These lectures systematically explain Christian doctrine with remarkable clarity and devotional warmth, covering the creed, sacraments, and spiritual life. Cyril endured significant persecution and exile under Arian emperors who opposed his orthodox Christology, demonstrating remarkable faithfulness amid political turmoil. He was imprisoned and exiled multiple times but always returned to his pastoral duties. His catechetical work profoundly influenced Eastern Christian theology and liturgical practice. Cyril died around 386 after serving his Jerusalem flock for decades. Though relatively unknown in the West, his catechetical homilies represent the Church's early wisdom and remain invaluable resources for understanding patristic Christianity.
