Biography
Dionysios of Zakynthos (1547-1622) was a Greek Orthodox bishop and saint who served as Metropolitan of Zakynthos for many years. Initially living as a hermit monk, he was eventually ordained bishop and became renowned for his spiritual wisdom and pastoral care. Throughout his ministry, Dionysios gained fame for miraculous interventions protecting his flock, particularly during plague outbreaks and against serpent bites. He maintained monastic simplicity despite his episcopal rank, spending considerable time in prayer and spiritual counsel. His relics were preserved after his death and became centers of pilgrimage. Numerous healing miracles were attributed to his intercession, especially eye diseases and various afflictions. Dionysios was canonized and is deeply venerated in the Ionian Islands, where he remains a protective patron saint. His feast day commemoration draws many devoted pilgrims to Zakynthos.
