Biography

Gerard Majella was an Italian lay brother of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer born in 1726. Entering religious life as a lay member, he served as a porter, gardener, and missionary helper while pursuing intense spiritual discipline. Known for his supernatural gifts, Gerard experienced ecstasies, received the stigmata, and reportedly bilocated. His deep devotion to Mary and profound humility made him beloved among the poor and suffering. He became particularly associated with pregnant women and difficult births, with many miraculous interventions reported through his intercession. Despite his exceptional gifts, Gerard remained obedient to his superiors and humble about his experiences. Canonized in 1904, he remains one of the most powerful intercessors for childbirth and maternal protection.
