Biography

Hubert (656-727) was a Frankish nobleman and passionate hunter who experienced a dramatic conversion after encountering a miraculous vision of a crucifix between a stag's antlers while hunting on Good Friday. Renouncing his worldly life, he became a Christian monk and eventually bishop of Liège, where he worked tirelessly to evangelize the pagan Ardennes region and establish churches and monasteries. He became known for his kindness toward both people and animals, and for transforming the culture of hunting from mere sport into a more respectful, sustainable practice. Hubert founded churches, established schools, and worked to suppress pagan practices while promoting Christian education and charitable works. His death and subsequent cult made him one of the most important saints of the Frankish church, and he remains deeply venerated in Belgium and the Ardennes, where he became associated with November 3 rather than his original November 5 feast day.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Hubert

O glorious Saint Hubert, mighty hunter and devoted servant of God, we beseech thee to intercede for us before the throne of the Almighty. Grant us the grace to pursue righteousness with the same fervor thou didst pursue the stag in the forest, and to recognize in all creatures the handiwork of our Creator. Protect us from the perils of the hunt and from the snares of sin, and guide us ever toward the light of Christ. Through thy powerful intercession, may we grow in faith and virtue. Amen.
