Biography

Ignatius was the third bishop of Antioch in the early 1st century, succeeding Peter himself. A prominent early Church leader, he was arrested during Emperor Trajan's persecution of Christians around 107 AD. While imprisoned and transported to Rome for execution, Ignatius wrote seven letters to various Christian communities that survive today as invaluable documents of early Christian theology and Church organization. His correspondence reveals his passionate faith, hierarchical ecclesiology, and desire for martyrdom. He was martyred in Rome, likely killed by wild beasts in the amphitheater. His letters emphasize the authority of bishops, the reality of the Eucharist, and the centrality of Christ to Christian life. Ignatius became a venerated martyr whose witness strengthened the early Church during persecution.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Ignatius of Antioch

O glorious Saint Ignatius of Antioch, martyr and bishop, who didst bear witness to Christ even unto death, and whose heart burned with love for the Divine Savior, we beseech thee to intercede for us before the throne of God. Grant us the courage to profess our faith boldly, the strength to endure all trials, and the burning love of Christ that consumed thy noble heart. Through thy powerful intercession, may we grow ever closer to Jesus and remain faithful unto the end. Amen.
