Biography

Jerome Emiliani was a Venetian priest and social reformer born in 1481 who dedicated his life to serving orphans and abandoned children. Initially a military officer, he experienced a spiritual conversion after being imprisoned as a captive and attributed his escape to divine intervention. He was ordained and subsequently established the first orphanages in Venice, Brescia, and Bergamo, pioneering systematic child welfare in Renaissance Italy. He founded the Congregation of the Servants of the Poor (Somaschi), a religious community focused on education and caring for society's most vulnerable. Jerome recognized that orphans needed not merely food and shelter but education and spiritual formation to become productive members of society. His innovative approach to child care and education became a model for later charitable institutions. He died in 1537 while ministering to plague victims. Pope Pius XI canonized him in 1928 as a saint of social welfare.
