Biography

Jerzy Popiełuszko (1947–1984) was a Polish Catholic priest and martyr who became a symbol of resistance against communist oppression. Ordained in 1972, he served as chaplain to workers and became deeply involved in the Solidarity movement during Poland's struggle for freedom. Known for his homilies celebrating Polish culture and Catholic faith, Popiełuszko organized "Masses for the Fatherland" that attracted thousands seeking spiritual renewal amidst political repression. His courage in openly criticizing the communist regime made him a target of state security forces. On October 19, 1984, he was abducted, tortured, and murdered by secret police officers. His martyrdom shocked Poland and the world, galvanizing the Solidarity movement and exposing the regime's brutality. Canonized in 2010, Popiełuszko remains a powerful witness to faith's triumph over tyranny and the priest's prophetic role in defending human dignity.
