Jerzy Popiełuszko (1947–1984) was a Polish Catholic priest and martyr who became a symbol of resistance against communist oppression. Ordained in 1972, he served as chaplain to workers and became deeply involved in the Solidarity movement during Poland's struggle for freedom.
