Biography

John Bosco (1815-1888) was an Italian Catholic priest and educator who revolutionized youth ministry through innovative and compassionate methods. Born in rural Piedmont to a peasant family, he was ordained and devoted himself to helping abandoned boys, street children, and juvenile delinquents in Turin. Recognizing that traditional rigid discipline failed these vulnerable youth, Don Bosco developed the 'Salesian method,' emphasizing kindness, encouragement, pastoral presence, and practical skill training. He established oratories—community centers offering education, vocational training, and spiritual guidance—alongside schools and apprenticeship programs. In 1859, he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious congregation that rapidly expanded to serve hundreds of thousands of young people across Europe and beyond. John Bosco pioneered preventive education focused on developing character and capability rather than punishment. His legacy profoundly influenced modern youth education and pastoral care, demonstrating that love and respect effectively transform lives. He was canonized in 1934.
