Biography

John Eudes (1601-1680) was a French priest, missionary, and mystic renowned for his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and pastoral care. Ordained in 1625, he joined the Oratorians and conducted extensive missionary work throughout Normandy, preaching missions that reformed parish life and deepened popular faith. Witnessing the spiritual neglect of clergy, John founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary to improve clerical formation and conduct parish missions. He established seminaries emphasizing moral discipline and spiritual development, profoundly influencing French ecclesiastical education. John developed systematic meditations on the Sacred Heart, contributing significantly to this devotion's theological foundation and widespread adoption in the Church. He authored numerous spiritual works including Lives of Saints and writings on the Sacred Heart that became influential across Catholicism. Known for his tender pastoral approach and tireless energy despite physical ailments, John ministered during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution's approach. He died at age 79, leaving behind reformed clergy, established institutions, and a deepened spiritual legacy that shaped Catholic practice.
