Biography

John of Capistrano (1386-1456) was an Italian Franciscan friar and papal legate renowned for his fiery preaching and reform efforts. Born in Capistrano, he studied law and initially served as a magistrate before entering the Franciscans around 1416. He became a celebrated preacher whose powerful oratory drew enormous crowds throughout Italy and Central Europe. As a papal legate, he conducted inquisitorial missions against heresy and worked to reform clergy discipline. He also served as a military chaplain during the Crusade of Varna and the Hungarian wars against Ottoman expansion, earning recognition for his role in the 1456 Siege of Belgrade. John's legacy encompassed theological scholarship, ecclesiastical reform, and staunch defense of Catholic orthodoxy during the pre-Reformation period.
