Biography

John (1896-1966) was a Russian Orthodox bishop and saint of extraordinary charity and pastoral dedication. Born Ivan Maximovich, he served as archbishop of Chinese Orthodox communities in Shanghai, then led Russian Orthodox exiles in San Francisco. Despite Communist upheaval displacing millions, John dedicated his life to providing spiritual sanctuary and material aid to destitute refugees. He lived with ascetic simplicity, surrendering personal comforts to help the poor and homeless. His administrative talents organized churches, parishes, and relief efforts across disparate exile communities. John possessed remarkable spiritual gifts—prophetic insights, miraculous healings, and profound mystical experiences—yet maintained profound humility. He walked city streets at night seeking the homeless, befriending prostitutes and addicts with Christ-like acceptance. His sermons radiated authentic Orthodox theology grounded in practical compassion. John never sought recognition, viewing himself as Christ's servant to the least. Canonized in 1994, he exemplifies authentic Christian faith expressed through radical charity.
