Biography
Leopold Mandić (1866-1942) was a Capuchin friar born in Castelnuovo in Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia). Despite being born deaf and mute, he overcame tremendous physical challenges to become a powerful instrument of God's grace. He was ordained a priest and dedicated his life primarily to the sacrament of confession, spending countless hours in the confessional ministering to the spiritually wounded. His extraordinary gift for reconciliation and his ability to bring peace to troubled souls became legendary. Leopold worked tirelessly for the reunion of separated Christian churches, particularly during the ecumenical movements of the early 20th century. His disability never hindered his spiritual mission; rather, it deepened his compassion for the suffering. He served faithfully until his death and was canonized in 1983, becoming a powerful witness to how faith transcends physical limitations.
