Biography
Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany and Lazarus, residing in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She is remembered as a devoted disciple who expressed her faith through active service and hospitality. When Jesus visited their home, Martha busied herself with meal preparations while her sister Mary sat listening to Jesus's teachings. Jesus gently reminded Martha that while service matters, contemplative presence with Him takes priority. Martha demonstrated remarkable faith, affirming her belief in Jesus as the Messiah and the Resurrection when her brother Lazarus died. She is portrayed as a woman of action and deep conviction, balancing practical charity with spiritual commitment. Post-Resurrection accounts suggest she evangelized Provence in France. Martha represents the integration of active charity and contemplative faith, showing that faithful service gains dignity when rooted in love for Christ.

Prayer to Saint Martha
O glorious Saint Martha, renowned for your faith and charity, and for your power over evil spirits, I beseech you to obtain for me the grace to serve the Lord with fidelity and zeal. Help me to be ever watchful and diligent in my duties, and to find in the midst of my labors that peace which comes from a good conscience. Intercede for me that I may grow in virtue and in love of God, and that I may one day join you in the glory of Heaven. Amen.
