Biography

Miguel Agustín Pro (1891-1927) was a Mexican Jesuit priest martyred during the Cristero War's religious persecution. Ordained in 1925, Pro ministered clandestinely during Mexico's anti-clerical violence when priests faced execution. Despite severe asthma, he devoted himself to pastoral work among Mexico's poor and marginalized. Pro administered sacraments secretly, celebrated Mass in private homes, and provided spiritual comfort to persecuted Catholics. His work extended to helping families of imprisoned priests and the destitute. On November 23, 1927, Pro was arrested on false charges of bombing a general's car. Without fair trial, he was sentenced to death. Facing execution with remarkable serenity, Pro forgave his executioners, refused a blindfold, and died with arms outstretched in cruciform position, uttering "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" (Long live Christ the King!). His martyrdom exposed the Mexican government's religious intolerance internationally. Pro's courageous witness, combined with his deep pastoral concern for the vulnerable, established him as a model of faith amidst persecution and inspired subsequent generations to defend religious freedom and justice.
