Biography

Nikola Tavelić (1340-1409) was a Franciscan missionary from Dalmatia who devoted his life to spreading the Christian faith in the Muslim-majority regions of the Ottoman Empire. During the late 14th and early 15th centuries, when the Ottoman conquest threatened Christian communities, Tavelić worked courageously in Jerusalem and the Holy Land, preaching the Gospel despite constant danger. He served as a custodian of Christian holy sites and worked to support persecuted Christian communities. His missionary efforts were marked by exceptional bravery and unwavering commitment to his faith, even as he faced opposition and persecution. Tavelić symbolized the Dalmatian Church's resilience during a period of tremendous religious and political upheaval. He was eventually martyred for his faith, sealing his witness with his blood. His legacy inspired countless Dalmatian missionaries who followed, and he remains venerated as a model of Christian courage and missionary dedication.
