Biography

Our Lady of the Rosary commemorates the Virgin Mary's role as intercessor and protector through devotion to the Rosary prayer. This veneration became formalized particularly after the Battle of Lepanto (1571), when a Catholic naval coalition defeated the Ottoman fleet; victory was attributed to prayers of the Rosary by Pope Pius V. The feast celebrates Mary's mediation between humanity and Christ, emphasizing the Rosary as a powerful spiritual weapon against evil and a path to deepened faith. Dominican friars, especially St. Dominic, promoted Rosary devotion as central to their charism. The mysteries of the Rosary—joyful, sorrowful, and glorious—guide meditations on Christ's life and redemptive work. Marian apparitions at Lourdes, Fatima, and other sites reinforced Rosary devotion. The feast was established to honor Mary's maternal care and her role in spiritual protection, making her venerable advocate for the faithful seeking peace, conversion, and divine grace.

Prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary

O Queen of the Holy Rosary, we beseech thee by the Rosary which thou didst love so well, to aid us in our present necessities. As thou didst find Jesus through the Rosary, so may we also find Him through the same means. We promise to honor thee by the daily recitation of the Rosary, and we entreat thee to obtain for us the graces we need for our salvation. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
