Biography
Paisios Velichkovsky (1722-1794) was an influential Eastern Orthodox monk and elder who spearheaded spiritual revival in Eastern Europe and Russia. Born in Ukraine, he eventually settled at the Neamț Monastery in Moldavia, which became a major center of monastic renewal. Paisios was instrumental in reviving hesychasm—contemplative Orthodox prayer practice—and emphasized the Jesus Prayer and the Philokalia. He established a innovative monastic community model emphasizing elder-disciple relationships and intensive spiritual training. His translation work on patristic texts made Eastern Orthodox spiritual wisdom widely accessible. Paisios attracted thousands of monastic disciples and reformed numerous monasteries throughout Russia and Moldavia. His spiritual methodology profoundly influenced 19th and 20th-century Orthodox monasticism. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and remains a major figure in Orthodox renewal movements. His teachings continue shaping contemplative Orthodox spirituality.
