Biography

Panteleimon (also Pantalone or Pantaleon) was a 4th-century physician and martyr whose legend emphasizes Christian healing combined with ultimate self-sacrifice. Born in Nicomedia (modern-day Turkey) to a pagan father and Christian mother, Panteleimon was educated in medicine and became renowned throughout the region for miraculous healing powers, treating patients regardless of their ability to pay. Tradition records he healed a blind man, earning his mother's conversion and later his own full Christian commitment. During the Diocletian persecution of Christians, Panteleimon openly practiced Christian healing and medicine until arrested and subjected to various tortures. According to tradition, he endured multiple execution attempts—burning, drowning, beheading—with divine protection until finally beheaded around 305 CE. His relics became venerated throughout the Christian world. Panteleimon represents the integration of medical science with Christian faith and charity, embodying the principle that genuine healing extends beyond the physical to encompass spiritual transformation and salvation.
