Biography

Pedro Calungsod was born around 1654 in Cebu, Philippines. As a young layman, he joined Spanish Jesuit missionaries working in the Mariana Islands, serving as a catechist and assistant evangelist. Despite the dangerous conditions and indigenous resistance to Christianity, Pedro dedicated himself to converting and instructing native peoples, often facing hostility. In 1672, while performing his catechetical duties on the island of Saipan, Pedro was killed by indigenous warriors opposed to Christian conversion. His martyrdom demonstrated the commitment of early lay missionaries to spreading the faith. Canonized in 2012, Pedro Calungsod became the first canonized Filipino youth and layperson. His life exemplifies how young people and lay faithful played crucial roles in missionary work, not merely ordained clergy.
