Biography
Born in Florence in 1515, Philip Neri moved to Rome as a young man and became a lay missionary, earning his living while tending to the spiritual needs of the poor and pilgrims. Ordained a priest in 1551, he established the Congregation of the Oratory, a community of secular priests dedicated to pastoral ministry and spiritual renewal. Philip pioneered innovative approaches to evangelization, using music, art, and drama in religious gatherings called 'Oratories' to engage the faithful. Known for his infectious joy, humor, and psychological insight, he became one of Rome's most beloved spiritual directors, profoundly influencing the Counter-Reformation. His personal holiness combined strict asceticism with remarkable accessibility and warmth. He resisted formal ecclesiastical advancement, choosing instead to remain a simple priest. Philip died in 1595 and was canonized in 1622.
