Biography

Sophrony (1896-1993) was a Russian Orthodox monastic elder and theologian who bridged Eastern Orthodox spirituality and Western consciousness. Originally a painter and student of icon theology, he became a monk and spent decades at Mount Athos under the spiritual direction of Staretz Silouan. After World War II, he established the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex, England, where he served as abbot and spiritual father to an international community. His writings on hesychasm, theosis, and the mystical tradition made Orthodox spirituality accessible to English-speaking readers. Known for his profound ascetical wisdom, liturgical sensitivity, and capacity to guide souls toward union with God, Sophrony exemplified the living transmission of ancient monastic tradition in the modern world.
