Biography

Stanisław (1030-1079) was a Polish bishop of Kraków who became a symbol of resistance against tyranny. Born into nobility, he received excellent religious education and was ordained a priest, eventually becoming bishop in 1072. When King Bolesław II the Bold ruled unjustly and immorally, Stanisław publicly condemned the monarch's crimes, including adultery and the murder of nobles. According to tradition, after Stanisław excommunicated the king, Bolesław pursued him into a church sanctuary near Kraków. During Mass, the king allegedly struck down the bishop himself, and his soldiers finished the execution. Stanisław's martyrdom profoundly impacted Polish Catholicism, establishing the principle that ecclesiastical authority supersedes royal power in moral matters. He was canonized in 1253 and became the primary patron saint of Poland.

Prayer

Prayer to St. Stanisław of Szczepanów

O glorious Saint Stanisław, Bishop and Martyr, who didst lay down thy life in defense of the Church and the innocent, we beseech thee to intercede for us before the throne of Almighty God. Grant us the courage to stand firm in faith, the wisdom to discern right from wrong, and the charity to defend the defenseless. Through thy powerful intercession, may we grow in holiness and perseverance unto eternal life. Amen.
