Biography
Stephen of Hungary (975-1038) was the first king of Hungary and a transformative Christian ruler. Born as Vajk, he converted to Christianity and took the name Stephen upon his baptism. Crowned king in 1000 with papal support, Stephen Christianized the Hungarian kingdom through legislative reforms and ecclesiastical organization. He established bishoprics, founded monasteries, and incorporated Christian law into his governance while maintaining political independence from the Holy Roman Empire. Stephen married Gisela of Bavaria, strengthening diplomatic ties, and had one son, Imre, whom he raised to be his successor. He implemented the Decrees of King Stephen, which formalized church organization and enforced Christian morality among his subjects. Known for his generosity to the poor and unwavering commitment to spreading Catholicism, Stephen transformed Hungary from a pagan kingdom into a Christian European state. He was canonized in 1083 and died peacefully in 1038, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and statecraft.
