Biography

Thomas, called Didymus (the Twin), was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He is remembered primarily for his initial doubting of Jesus's Resurrection until he personally witnessed the risen Christ. This biblical account has made Thomas a symbol for those who struggle with faith, though it ultimately demonstrates his genuine devotion—his doubt led to profound faith. Thomas is recognized for his willingness to face danger, declaring his readiness to die with Jesus. After Pentecost, tradition holds that Thomas became a missionary apostle, traveling to India where he established Christian communities in Kerala. He founded several churches and converted many to Christianity. Thomas faced persecution and was eventually martyred, traditionally believed to be killed by spear or arrow in Mylapore, India, around 72 AD. His relics were later translated to Edessa and eventually to other locations. Thomas's legacy encompasses both his apostolic mission and his representation of authentic faith that overcomes reasonable skepticism through personal encounter with truth.
