Životopis

André Bessette (1845-1937) was a French-Canadian Holy Cross lay brother whose life exemplified radical simplicity and powerful intercession. Joining the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1867 despite chronic health issues, he worked as a porter at Notre-Dame College in Montreal for forty years, greeting visitors at the gate. His reputation for miracles attracted thousands seeking healing through his prayers, particularly those invoking Saint Joseph. Recognizing this spiritual movement, the Church authorized construction of Saint Joseph's Oratory on Montreal's Mount Royal, which became a major pilgrimage site under Bessette's spiritual guidance. Though uneducated and considered physically fragile, André possessed profound theological insight expressed through simple, direct words. His constant recitation of Ave Marias and trust in divine providence inspired remarkable healings attributed to Saint Joseph's intercession. Bessette spent his final years in devoted prayer within the Oratory. His canonization recognized how God works through humble instruments to accomplish extraordinary spiritual fruit. His life demonstrates that sanctity requires neither intellectual sophistication nor robust health, but rather childlike faith and surrendered love.
