Životopis

Anthony Mary Claret (1807-1876) was a Spanish Claretian missionary priest and archbishop known for his tireless evangelization and prophetic reform work. Born in Catalonia, he was ordained in 1835 and founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians) to extend missionary work globally. As archbishop of Santiago de Cuba (1850-1857), he confronted slavery, corruption, and ecclesiastical laxity with uncompromising determination. Despite facing violent opposition and multiple assassination attempts, he remained dedicated to spiritual renewal and social justice. He wrote prolifically on theology and spirituality, emphasizing Marian devotion and priestly holiness. Exiled to Rome for his reforming activities, he served as papal chaplain and continued advocating for Church renewal until his death, leaving a profound legacy in missionary spirituality and ecclesiastical reform.
