Životopis

Apollinaris was the first bishop of Ravenna, appointed by Saint Peter himself according to tradition. He lived during the 1st century and devoted his episcopate to converting the pagan inhabitants of the Adriatic coastal region. Known for miraculous healings and exorcisms, Apollinaris exemplified apostolic dedication and pastoral care. He endured severe persecution under Roman emperors who opposed Christian expansion, ultimately suffering martyrdom for his unwavering faith. Historical accounts describe him being beaten, imprisoned, and subjected to torture, yet he never renounced his commitment to Christ. His relics became venerated in Ravenna's basilica, making him one of the most honored early Christian martyrs of the Adriatic region. Though details of his life blend legend with history, his significance as a foundational figure in Italian Christian evangelization is well-established. Apollinaris embodies the courage required of early Church leaders who faced imperial hostility while building Christian communities.
