Životopis

Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions represents 120 Chinese and foreign martyrs (103 Chinese, 17 foreign missionaries) executed during the Qing Dynasty persecutions between 1648-1856. Augustine Zhao Rong (1746-1815), a former soldier turned priest, exemplified the Chinese Catholic leadership that sustained faith under intense political and religious opposition. These martyrs—bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful—endured imprisonment, torture, and execution rather than renounce Christianity or apostolicize their faith. Many were victims of anti-foreign sentiment and Confucian hostility toward Christianity. Their witness demonstrates how the Church took deep root in China through indigenous leadership and local commitment. Canonized together in 2000 by Pope John Paul II during his jubilee, they represent centuries of Chinese Catholic perseverance. Their collective memory celebrates the universality of the Church while honoring the particular sufferings and sacrifices of Asian Christianity.
