Ignatius of Antioch

Ignatius was the third bishop of Antioch in the early 1st century, succeeding Peter himself. A prominent early Church leader, he was arrested during Emperor Trajan's persecution of Christians around 107 AD. While imprisoned and transported to Rome for execution, Ignatius wrote seven letters to various Christian communities that survive today as invaluable documents of early Christian theology and Church organization. His correspondence reveals his passionate faith, hierarchical ecclesiology, and desire for martyrdom. He was martyred in Rome, likely killed by wild beasts in the amphitheater. His letters emphasize the authority of bishops, the reality of the Eucharist, and the centrality of Christ to Christian life. Ignatius became a venerated martyr whose witness strengthened the early Church during persecution.
