Životopis

Januarius (d. c. 305) was a bishop of Naples during the Diocletian persecution. According to tradition, he was arrested with several Christian companions and condemned to death. He survived being thrown to wild beasts in the amphitheater, an event witnessed by the martyr Sossius. Later accounts describe Januarius's beheading and the collection of his blood by a Christian woman named Eusebia. His relics were enshrined in Naples, where he became profoundly venerated. The famous phenomenon of his liquefied blood, housed in two vials in the Naples Cathedral, has been observed for centuries—the congealed blood reportedly becomes liquid multiple times yearly, an event regarded as miraculous by the faithful despite scientific investigations offering natural explanations. Januarius became Naples's patron saint and protector against Vesuvian eruptions. He symbolizes Christian martyrdom and remains one of Italy's most beloved saints, with profound popular devotion continuing in Naples.
