Jerome (c. 342-420) was a Church Father and Doctor of the Church whose greatest achievement was translating the Bible into Latin, producing the Vulgate that became the standard biblical text for centuries. Born in Dalmatia, he studied rhetoric and languages in Rome before embracing monastic life in the Syrian desert around 375. His scholarly rigor and knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin made him invaluable to the Church. He served as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later established a monastery in Bethlehem where he spent his final decades in study and translation work. Jerome's passionate temperament, evident in his correspondence and polemical writings against heresies, reflected his fierce commitment to doctrinal accuracy and spiritual truth. His translation work revolutionized biblical scholarship and remains foundational to Catholic tradition.
