Životopis

John Damascene (c. 676-749) was a Syrian theologian, poet, and monk who stands as one of the most important figures in Eastern Christian thought. Born into a wealthy family in Damascus, he initially worked in the Muslim caliph's administration before renouncing worldly life and joining the monastic community of Mar Saba near Jerusalem. There he devoted himself to theology, philosophy, and writing. John is best known for his staunch theological defense of sacred images during the Iconoclast controversy, arguing that venerating images of Christ and saints is compatible with Christian faith and biblical tradition. His principal work, 'An Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith,' synthesized Greek patristic theology and became foundational for Catholic and Orthodox theology. He also excelled as a hymnographer and poet, composing liturgical texts still used in Eastern Christianity. Canonized as a Doctor of the Church, John Damascene represents the integration of faith and reason, artistic expression and theology, making him patron of artists and theologians.
