Joseph the Worker, venerated on May 1, commemorates Saint Joseph's significance as a laborer and protector of Jesus and Mary. Though sparse in Gospel accounts, Joseph emerges as a righteous, hardworking craftsman (tekton in Greek, often translated as carpenter) of Nazareth. He provided materially for Jesus and Mary through skilled manual labor while protecting them from Herod's persecution during their flight to Egypt. Joseph exemplifies the dignity of ordinary work, performing his trade with integrity to support his family. He represents the sanctification of daily labor and domestic life, demonstrating that holiness flourishes through faithful duty rather than extraordinary deeds.
