Životopis

Juan Diego (1474-1548) was an indigenous Nahua man living in central Mexico in the aftermath of Spanish conquest. On December 9, 1531, while traveling to attend religious instruction in Mexico City, Juan Diego reported experiencing a vision of the Virgin Mary at Tepeyac Hill, speaking to him in his native Nahuatl language. The Virgin instructed him to ask the Spanish bishop to build a chapel at the site. Initially doubted, Juan Diego persisted in his mission with humble obedience despite obstacles. When asked for a sign, roses miraculously appeared in his tilma (cloak), along with an image of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. The bishop accepted this evidence, and a chapel was built, becoming one of Catholicism's most important pilgrimage sites. Juan Diego became a symbol of faith and dignity for indigenous peoples, demonstrating that God's grace reaches all cultures and social classes. He spent his remaining years in devotion at the chapel, tending the shrine and catechizing visitors, embodying humble service.
