Životopis

Miguel José Serra was born in 1713 in Petra, Majorca, Spain. A Franciscan friar and priest, he dedicated his life to missionary work in the New World. Serra arrived in Mexico in 1750 and served in various missions before being assigned to Alta California in 1769. He founded or co-founded nine missions along the California coast, including San Diego, San Carlos Borromeo, San Gabriel, San Luis Obispo, and San Buenaventura. Despite arthritis and poor health, Serra traveled thousands of miles to expand the mission system and evangelize Native Americans. He baptized thousands of indigenous peoples and worked to protect them from exploitation. Serra established agricultural, educational, and spiritual programs to support mission communities. He served as Superior of the California missions until his death in 1784. Though his legacy is complex—involving both genuine spiritual dedication and the complicated impact of colonization—Serra was canonized in 2015, recognized for his missionary commitment and concern for Native American welfare within his historical context.
