Životopis

Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680) was a Mohawk-Algonquian woman and the first Native American north of Mexico to be canonized. Born near present-day Auriesville, New York, she survived a smallpox epidemic at age four that scarred her face and weakened her vision. Orphaned by the disease, she was raised by relatives who rejected Christian faith. At age 18, Kateri encountered Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism, facing fierce persecution from her tribe. Her choice to embrace celibacy and Christian practice was radical in her culture. She fled to the Christian Mohawk village of Kahnawake near Montreal, where she lived ascetically, practicing extreme penances and deepening her mystical union with Christ. Kateri died at 24 and was canonized in 2012. Her legacy represents the intersection of indigenous spirituality and Catholic faith, inspiring contemporary Native American Catholics and environmentalists.
