Saint Mark the Evangelist (c. 5-74 AD) was an apostolic figure and author of the second Gospel, traditionally believed to be the first written account of Jesus's life. Known as John Mark in Acts, he was a companion of the Apostles Peter and Paul, witnessing their ministries directly. Mark established the Church in Alexandria, Egypt, making him foundational to Coptic Christianity. His Gospel emphasizes Jesus's humanity, actions, and the suffering involved in discipleship, written in clear, straightforward language for gentile converts. According to tradition, Mark was martyred in Alexandria around 74 AD, dragged through the streets and executed. His relics were famously transferred to Venice in 828, making him Venice's patron saint. The lion, Mark's symbolic evangelist attribute, represents strength and vigilance. His feast day on April 25 celebrates his apostolic legacy and the Gospel bearing his name.
