Born in 1579 in Lima, Peru, Martín was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a Black freedwoman. Initially denied entry to the Dominican order due to his racial background, he persisted and was accepted as a lay brother. Working as a barber-surgeon, Martín became renowned for miraculous healings, tending to the poor and enslaved with extraordinary compassion. He practiced extreme mortification alongside profound mystical experiences. Despite his humble station, Martín earned respect from the highest church authorities through his holiness and supernatural gifts. He established orphanages and hospitals serving society's most marginalized members. Canonized in 1962, Martín became a powerful symbol of racial equality and the dignity of manual labor. His life demonstrated that sanctity transcends social status and racial prejudice.
