Životopis

Matthew, also called Levi, was a Jewish tax collector for the Roman occupiers of Palestine, a profession considered dishonorable and a form of collaboration. His encounter with Jesus transformed his life entirely. When Jesus said, 'Follow me,' Matthew immediately abandoned his lucrative position to become an apostle. He hosted a banquet at his home to introduce Jesus to his associates, an act demonstrating his new commitment and desire to share his faith. Matthew became one of the Twelve Apostles and authored the Gospel of Matthew, which emphasizes Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and presents him as the Messiah for both Jews and Gentiles. This gospel became foundational to Christian theology and remains widely read. After Pentecost, Matthew preached and spread Christianity, possibly traveling as a missionary. Early Christian tradition holds he was eventually martyred for his faith, though accounts vary regarding his location and method of death.
