This veneration became formalized particularly after the Battle of Lepanto (1571), when a Catholic naval coalition defeated the Ottoman fleet; victory was attributed to prayers of the Rosary by Pope Pius V. The feast celebrates Mary's mediation between humanity and Christ, emphasizing the Rosary as a powerful spiritual weapon against evil and a path to deepened faith. Dominican friars, especially St. Dominic, promoted Rosary devotion as central to their charism.
