Životopis
Raymond of Peñafort was a Spanish Dominican friar and canonist born around 1175 in Peñafort, Catalonia. He studied law at Bologna and became one of the most influential canon lawyers of the medieval Church. Entering the Dominican Order around 1222, Raymond compiled the Decretals of Gregory IX, a foundational text of canon law that shaped ecclesiastical jurisprudence for centuries. He served as confessor to Pope Gregory IX and was instrumental in developing the sacrament of penance theology. As Master General of the Dominicans from 1238 to 1240, he reformed the order and promoted missionary work. Raymond established the Mercedarians for ransom of captives and wrote extensively on moral theology. He lived to advanced age, dying in Barcelona in 1275, and was canonized in 1601 for his scholarly contributions and spiritual influence.
