Životopis

Saint Scholastica was the twin sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia and the founder of the first convent in the Benedictine tradition, living in the 6th century in Italy. Little is known with certainty about her early life, but she established a community of religious women near Monte Cassino, her brother's famous monastery. She followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, which her brother had written, adapting it for her female community. According to tradition recorded by Pope Gregory I, Scholastica and Benedict met annually to discuss spiritual matters. In one famous account, when Benedict insisted on returning to his monastery before nightfall despite her desire for extended conversation, Scholastica prayed and a sudden storm prevented his departure, allowing them further time together. She died around 543 and was buried in the same tomb as her brother. Scholastica represents the Benedictine commitment to contemplative prayer, community living, and the feminine dimension of monastic tradition in the early Church.
