Životopis

Sebastian was an early Christian martyr revered for his extraordinary faith and endurance under persecution. Born around 256, he served as a soldier in the Roman army while secretly practicing Christianity and converting fellow soldiers. When Roman Emperor Diocletian discovered Sebastian's faith, he ordered him executed by arrow—a death meant to be humiliating and agonizing. According to tradition, Sebastian survived the arrows and was healed by Saint Irene, only to be martyred again by beating under Diocletian's orders around 288. Sebastian's story resonated powerfully throughout Christian history; his image as a young man pierced with arrows became iconic in Christian art and spirituality. He became especially invoked against plague, as medieval Christians associated his arrow wounds with plague arrows. Sebastian's unwavering faith despite torture inspired countless martyrs and remains a symbol of courage and perseverance. His cult spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire and beyond, making him one of Christianity's most recognizable and beloved martyrs.
