Životopis
Born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada in 1515, Teresa of Ávila became a Carmelite nun and one of Catholic Christianity's greatest mystical theologians. Experiencing profound spiritual experiences, including visions and divine union, she meticulously documented her interior life in works like The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, providing unprecedented psychological insight into contemplative prayer. Beyond mysticism, Teresa was a practical reformer who founded seventeen convents of the Discalced Carmelites, establishing communities dedicated to stricter observance and deeper prayer. She endured ecclesiastical suspicion due to her mystical claims, yet her theological precision and orthodoxy ultimately won approval. Her writing, blending poetry, theology, and autobiography, remains influential in spiritual direction. Canonized in 1622, she was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970. Teresa exemplified integration of contemplation with active service, proving that mystical depth and practical effectiveness need not conflict.
