Biography
Bernardine of Siena (1380-1444) was an Italian Franciscan friar and mystic whose powerful preaching sparked spiritual revival throughout Italy during the Renaissance. Born in Siena, he entered the Franciscan order at age twenty and became renowned for his passionate sermons addressing moral corruption and social disorder. He traveled extensively across Italy, drawing enormous crowds and performing miracles. Bernardine promoted devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, depicted as IHS on a radiant sun, which became his distinctive emblem. He founded the Olivetans and served as Vicar General of the Franciscan Observants, reforming the order. Though his preaching sometimes provoked suspicion from Church authorities, he was eventually vindicated. He died at Aquila and was canonized in 1450, becoming the first saint canonized in St. Peter's Basilica. His legacy endures as a model of evangelical preaching and spiritual reform.
