Biography

Gabriel the Archangel's name means 'God is my strength' or 'God is my might.' He is one of the most prominent angels in Scripture, appearing as God's messenger in crucial moments of salvation history. Gabriel announced to the prophet Daniel the coming of the Messiah and the timeline of salvation. Most famously, he announced to Mary that she would conceive and bear Jesus Christ, the Son of God, asking for her consent to this divine plan. Gabriel also announced to Zechariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist. In Islamic tradition, Gabriel (Jibril) is particularly revered as the angel who revealed the Quran to Muhammad. Gabriel symbolizes divine communication, obedience to God's will, and heavenly announcements of significant events. His appearances emphasize the importance of God's word and the acceptance of divine purpose. The Feast of Michaelmas (September 29) celebrates Gabriel alongside Michael and Raphael. Gabriel is venerated as patron of messengers and all who communicate God's word.

Prayer

Prayer to Saint Gabriel the Archangel

O glorious Archangel Saint Gabriel, we beseech thee, assist us by thy powerful intercession in all our spiritual necessities, and obtain for us from the Divine Mercy all the graces we need both for soul and body. Defend us against the snares of the enemy, and shield us by thy heavenly protection. O thou who didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, obtain for us a deep love of the Incarnate Word and a tender devotion to His Blessed Mother. Help us to live in such a manner that we may be found worthy to enter into the joy of the Lord. Amen.
