Biography

Michael the Archangel is one of the principal angels in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, whose name means 'Who is like God?' He appears throughout Scripture as God's warrior and protector. In the Book of Daniel, Michael defends God's people against spiritual forces of darkness. In the Book of Revelation, he leads God's army against Satan and the fallen angels, casting them from heaven. Tradition identifies Michael as the angel who announced to Mary the Incarnation (sometimes attributed to Gabriel), who warned Noah of the flood, and who guided souls to heaven. In Christian imagery, Michael is depicted in armor with a sword, often shown vanquishing Satan or demons. The Feast of Michaelmas (September 29) celebrates Michael and fellow archangels Gabriel and Raphael. Michael represents divine power against evil and protection for believers. He is particularly venerated by military personnel and those in protective professions. Catholic tradition honors Michael as the defender of the Church and intercessor for souls.
